The face of the Progressive Conservative party in Alberta continues to change, with two more MLAs resigning their seats in the Legislature.

On Monday, MLAs Ken Hughes and Len Webber both announced they were stepping down from their seats in Calgary-West and Calgary-Foothills, respectively.

Webber said he was stepping down to start his bid to enter federal politics for the Calgary-Confederation riding as the nominee for the Conservative Party in 2015.

Calgary-West MLA Ken Hughes said in a statement issued Monday that he was stepping down “in order to create opportunities for renewal”.

“I step aside confident that my decision will contribute to the current renewal of the Progressive Conservative Party and the Government of Alberta,” Hughes said in his statement.

The two resignations left four vacancies in the Legislature, in the constituencies of Edmonton-Whitemud, Calgary-Elbow, Calgary-West and Calgary-Foothills.

Premier Jim Prentice announced late Monday that by-elections would be held in those four areas October 27.
