Wild weather: Deadly cyclone, powerful storm and rare tornado

Share

Here are some of the weather stories making headlines around the world this past week.

Northern California got hit with an EF-1 tornado. Tornadoes in that part of the world are extremely rare.

The twister touched down about 100 km outside of San Francisco.

The severe weather conditions also prompted the first-ever tornado warning for San Francisco.

At least five people were injured and the storm did extensive damage, flipped vehicles and knocked out power for thousands of people.

Cyclone Chido devastated the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean.

It’s estimated to be the most powerful storm to hit the region in the past century, with wind speeds of more than 200 km/h.

Roofs were torn off buildings and homes, power and phone lines were knocked out.

Officials say the death toll could reach into the thousands.

Vancouver Island was hit with a powerful storm that produced wind gusts over 100 km/h and coastal flooding from the storm surge.

That storm surge was up to a metre above normal high tide levels in some spots and caused waterfront damage to walkways, coastal barricades and boat launches.

Power was also knocked out for thousands of people on the island.

The storm system was also responsible for flooding and landslides on the B.C. lower mainland that washed away a home with two people believed to be inside.
