The largest airplane in the world landed at the Edmonton International Airport Friday morning, to deliver equipment set for a fertilizer plant northeast of Edmonton.
The Antonov An-225 landed at the airport Friday after 7:30 a.m.
The aircraft, the only example of its kind ever built, was originally designed to carry the Soviet Union’s Space Shuttle.
At two-and-a-half times as long as a Boeing 737, officials said the aircraft is capable of lifting more than the equivalent of three fully-loaded 737s, or seven humpback whales.
The aircraft was in Edmonton to deliver a Waste Heat Boiler, used to produce nitrogen fertilizer, to Agrium Redwater Fertilizer Operations facility northeast of Edmonton.
The aircraft's arrival marked one of the final stages the equipment's delivery from Berlin.
