A young woman, believed to be in her late teens, was sent to hospital with serious injuries after a single vehicle crash late Thursday.
A truck ran off the road, just before 11:00 pm, in the area of 60 Ave. and Gateway Boulevard.
The vehicle struck a light standard and the driver was trapped inside. Witnesses say she appeared to be racing another vehicle, shortly before the collision.
"I think the seat belt did help her." said Fire Captain Marty McNamara. "Once again, it was a high speed collision with an impact on the passenger side and an impact on the driver side. The patient was conscious on arrival. She did have serious injuries."
The woman had to have part of her leg amputated. It took rescue crews about two hours to free her from the wreck.
