1 dead in Saturday night confrontation with Cold Lake RCMP officers

An investigation is underway after a man died in a confrontation with Cold Lake RCMP Saturday night.

At around 8 p.m., officers responded to reports of an attempted stabbing at a transit stop on 50 Street at 43 Avenue in Cold Lake, Alta.

Two officers arrived and located the suspect, who was a man with an edged weapon.

Police said in a media release that they were forced to implement intervention options, including use of firearms to bring the suspect into custody.

He was transported to hospital, where he died.

No one else was injured.

Investigators from Alberta Serious Incidents Response Team (ASIRT) are conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
