26 charges laid in Alberta crash that killed 2 motorcyclists on charity ride
A Slave Lake man is facing more than two dozen charges in connection with a crash that killed two people and injured several others in August.
Michael Maurice Koochin was arrested and charged on Wednesday.
Laurent Isadore, 38, of Driftpile First Nation, and Tyler Duboski, 33, of Edmonton were killed on the afternoon of Aug. 31 when a semi driven by Koochin crossed the centre line on Highway 2 near Range Road 143 and ploughed into a group from the Redrum Motorcycle Club participating in a charity ride.
Four other motorcyclists were taken to hospital.
Koochin was charged with:
- two counts of criminal negligence, causing death (without firearm);
- six counts of criminal negligence, causing bodily harm;
- two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death;
- six counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle collision causing bodily harm;
- possession of methamphetamine;
- driver fail to prepare trip inspection report in legible format;
- driver fail to maintain an accurate daily log in duplicate;
- driver operate commercial vehicle not complying with standards as specified in Section 10(N)(II) Schedule 2 of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation;
- driver operate a commercial vehicle not complying with standards as specified in Section 14(A)(III) Schedule 2 of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation;
- driver operate commercial vehicle not inspected under daily trip inspection requirements and with major defect;
- driver fail to operate a commercial vehicle as specified;
- driver operate commercial vehicle not complying with standards as specified in section 16(2)(A) Schedule 2 of the commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation – Vehicle not equipped with brake system acting on all wheels;
- driver operate motor vehicle that was not insured; and
- driver operate a motor vehicle not complying with standards as specified in section 12(a) Schedule 2 of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation.
Koochin was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
