Emergency crews were on the scene of a serious collision Saturday afternoon on a central Alberta highway.

The collision took place on Highway 11 at Range Road 42 at about 3 p.m.

RCMP told CTV News that a Mustang lost control on the highway, eventually hitting a truck.

Police originally said one person, the driver of the car died, and three passengers were taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

However, later Saturday evening, RCMP said the driver had been taken to hospital with serious injuries, and at least two passengers, including a female who was sitting in the front passenger seat, had been pronounced dead at the scene.

It wasn’t clear how many people were in the back seat of the car, RCMP said extraction was still ongoing after 6 p.m. Saturday.

According to police, the car had regained control, facing east, when it was hit by another vehicle from behind.

Police said two people were in the other vehicle, and they were not hurt.

STARS Air Ambulance, RCMP and emergency crews were called to the scene and stayed there for several hours.

Due to the crash, drivers were asked to detour onto Township Road 384 and link up to Range Road 43 as Highway 11 was blocked.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, but RCMP said there had been freezing rain in the area.
