A citronella candle left burning throughout the day is the cause for a fire that destroyed a home in St. Albert, officials say.

Fire crews responded to the scene on Normandeau Crescent around 9 p.m. They found the two-storey structure fully involved in flames.

The homeowner told CTV News they had just moved in last month. Everyone was home at the time, outside in the backyard.

Neighbouring houses suffered some heat damage but were saved from the blaze.

No injuries were reported in the fire. Officials say damage is estimated between $750,000 to $1,000,000.

St. Albert Fire Services continues to douse hot spots. They will remain on the scene until all areas are completely out.
