A couple from Peers, Alberta has won the largest ever lottery prize, $60 million, in the Lotto Max draw from late September.

Brett McCoy and Robin Walker said they were together when they bought the winning ticket at the McLeod Trading Post in Peers, ahead of the September 22 draw.

McCoy said at the time, he was cashing in another winning ticket.

“I won $100, and I was pretty excited,” McCoy said in a news release. “I remember thinking that I never win anything.”

The day after the draw, the couple stopped at the same store, and Walker went inside while McCoy waited outside.

“I ran into the store to buy chicken feed and some treats for my kids,” she said. “I grabbed all our lottery tickets out of the glove compartment.”

She said “a whole bunch of numbers came up on the screen when I scanned the ticket”, but she appeared to misread the screen.

“I ran outside and told Brett we won $60,000,” she said.

“The store clerk came after me and said, ‘Robin – count the zeroes.’”

Their $60 million Lotto Max win sets a new record for the biggest lottery prize ever won in Alberta.

Now, the couple said they’re not planning on making any big decisions right away.

“We’ll get a few things we need, but we’re going to sit tight for now,” Walker said.
