Police are investigating, after a man was found on the LRT tracks in northeast Edmonton early Monday morning.
Just before 5 a.m. Monday, a train was heading southbound before starting service, when the operators on the train noticed a body on the tracks.
According to police, the operators tried to stop the train, but struck the person – who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators aren’t yet sure if the man was dead before the collision, or died as a result of the crash – police are treating the death as suspicious.
It’s not clear how the man ended up there either, police said the area is accessible to pedestrians, but isn’t meant for foot traffic.
“At the end of the day, it’s not open a lot to pedestrians,” EPS Insp. Joel Whittaker said. “But you can see there’s a lot of different ways you can still get in here.”
The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Unit is handling the investigation.
LRT service was disrupted during the morning commute, but returned to normal a few hours later.
