With weeks to go before their mid-May deadline, teachers with the Edmonton Public School District voted to ratify a contract deal with the provincial government.
The district’s 5,000 teachers cast their votes Sunday night – and accepted the tentative four-year deal.
“At the end of the day, members looked at this as something they hope will lead to improvements in conditions,” Alberta Teachers’ Assocation Local No. 37 president Ed Butler said Sunday.
“[It] will lead to our members being able to deliver a higher quality of education to the people.”
The contract offers a pay freeze for the first three years, followed by a small increase, and a bonus, in the fourth year.
According to the ATA, seven bargaining units have ratified the deal; another 55 local units still need to vote.
Teachers with the Edmonton Catholic School District are scheduled to vote Tuesday.
Local bargaining units have until May 13 to vote on the deal.
