Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Central Alberta.

Heavy rain is expected to fall throughout the region Sunday, as a low pressure system stalls in the area before moving down south later Sunday afternoon.

Many areas of Central Alberta have already received 20 to 30 millimetres of rain.

Environment Canada says areas west of Edmonton have reported over 50 millimetres.

The following communities are under the rainfall warning:

  • Edmonton – St. Albert – Sherwood Park
  • Spruce Grove – Morinville – Mayerthorpe – Evansburg
  • Whitecourt – Edson – Fox Creek – Swan Hills
  • Westlock – Barrhead – Athabasca
  • Fort Saskatchewan – Vegreville – Redwater – Smoky Lake
  • Drayton Valley – Devon – Rimbey – Pigeon Lake
  • Rocky Mountain House – Caroline
  • Nordegg – Forestry Trunk Road Highway 734

In total, Edmonton and surrounding areas is expected to receive an additional 30-50 millimetres by Monday morning.

Environment Canada says the rain is expected to taper off by Monday morning.
