Officials with the Edmonton Police Service announced Friday that a hijab option for the police uniform had been approved.
EPS said a prototype for a police-approved hijab had been developed with the help of a hijab tailor by the EPS Equity, Diversity and Human Rights Unit, and the EPS Tactics Training Unit.
The prototype underwent a series of tests, and officials said it was determined the headscarf posed no risk to the officer wearing it.
Officials said the prototype meets requirements set out by Occupational Health and Safety officials, and professional standards for the EPS uniform.
The hijab has been approved by the EPS Chief’s Committee, and necessary changes have been made to Uniform Policy – the changes are also backed by Edmonton’s Muslim community, EPS said.
At this time, police said there are no members or applicants that have requested to wear the hijab.
