A 32-year-old male patient who escaped from Alberta Hospital Tuesday has been found in downtown Edmonton just before 4 a.m. Thursday.

Police say Douglas Campbell was located in the area of 100 Avenue and 103 Street. Police received a report from a citizen of a man matching Campbell's description.

"He was taken into custody without incident early this morning by our members. We were able to get that info as a result of a call from a citizen who reported that they thought they spotted someone who matched the description of this Alberta Hospital patient," said police spokesperson Lisa Sobchyshyn.

Officers located the man and transported him back to the hospital.

Campbell escaped from secure custody at the facility at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Alberta Health Services says he climbed a 10-foot fence to escape the facility. Officials say he was playing basketball in a secured area of the hospital with staff around, when he climbed the fence and took off.

This comes two weeks after another Alberta Hospital patient, Melissa Ekkelenkamp, walked away from the facility. Ekkelenkamp suffers from manic depressive disorder, and paranoia. She had been committed to the hospital one week before her disappearance.

Her family has insisted she was supposed to be in a secure unit with supervision. She has yet to be located.

Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky has now ordered a review into security procedures at the facility in order to figure out what went wrong.

"Obviously there was some type of a distraction that may have occurred. There was perhaps a moment of supervision that could have been different," he said.

Hospital officials insist no protocols were breached in this recent case and that the facility is capable of monitoring its patients.

The minister wants to see a report back in the coming weeks.
