Edmonton police have blocked off a section of road in the southeast corner of the city, after a body was found in a ditch Wednesday morning.
Investigators on the scene said city crews spraying for mosquitos discovered the body just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, and called police.
Shortly after that, officers blocked off the area to conduct their investigation.
“We’re walking the ditches on either side, checking to see if there is any evidence in there,” EPS Inspector Brian Nowlan said. “There’s no vehicle there, so obviously he was placed there or he walked there on his own.”
Police on the scene told CTV News the death is considered suspicious, and the victim is believed to be male, under 30-years-old.
An officer on the scene said there were obvious signs of trauma, but wouldn't comment on specific injuries.
Investigators later said it will be up to the Medical Examiner’s office to confirm any of that information.
“There are no signs of decomposition on the body, so only the medical examiner would be able to tell us for sure how long the body’s been there,” Nowlan said. “But it appeared to be put there recently.”
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone.
Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
