Edmonton police said Friday that the search for a suspect was on, after an individual was injured in an assault at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Police said officers were called to the hospital at about 10:40 a.m. – after an assault with a weapon was reported.

EPS said one male was in hospital being treated for his injuries, it’s alleged he was assaulted in the hospital’s parking lot.

Investigators later said the individual injured in the incident is a 57-year-old man.

Investigators said the suspect was at large, and is described as:

  • Aboriginal male
  • Believed to be in his 20s
  • Short dark hair, in a brush cut

The suspect was reportedly wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with large white lettering, dark jeans and green running shoes. It’s believed the suspect fled from the hospital in a southwest direction.

Officials with Edmonton Public Schools said Victoria School, located across Kingsway Avenue from the hospital, was placed on lockdown while police searched for the suspect.

A short time later, however, officials with Edmonton Public Schools said the lockdown was lifted - police said the search for the suspect continued.
