Edmonton police have laid charges against a man for his alleged role in a fatal collision dating back more than two months, and investigators are crediting a public tip with helping police lay charges.

On Monday, December 2, 2013 at about 1:30 a.m., a group of five people were walking north at 105 Avenue and 102 Street, when a minivan drove around the corner, hitting a 25-year-old man – who was part of that group.

According to police, the van didn’t stop – continuing north on 102 Street. The group was walking on the road because there were no sidewalks in that area.

Police found the van abandoned near 105 Avenue and 96 Street a short time later.

The man, who was from Wabasca, Alberta, was treated and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, December 4.

Darnell Belcourt, 19, has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of a collision causing death.

EPS investigators said a tip from the public helped police charge the accused.

“In the beginning we had no idea who the responsible party was,” Sgt. Gary Lamont said. “But because of these phone calls we got from the public they were greatly assisted us in bringing this investigation to a successful conclusion.”

The investigation continues, and additional charges are pending.
