Police have confirmed the identity of the suspect involved in the RCMP shootings in St. Albert.

Officials said Shawn Maxwell Rehn, 34, was known to police.

“I can tell you that Shawn Rehn was known to police, and had a long, extensive criminal record that included acts of violence.” said Commr. Bob Paulson said.

Sources have also confirmed to CTV News that Rehn had an ongoing drug problem.

Rehn was the man police say who shot two officers, Const. David Wynn and Aux. Const. Derek Bond early Saturday at the Apex casino.

According to Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan the two officers were shot at close range by Rehn as they were attempting to arrest him.

She explained that Aux. Const. Bond, who was released from hospital Saturday night, was treated for gunshot wounds to his right arm and torso.

“The bullet narrowly missed vital organs,” she added.

Ryan also said the outlook for Wynn was not good.

“He is being treated and looked after in the hospital but it is not optimistic that he will survive.

“We are prayer for him. That is all we can do.”

Bond and Wynn were shot while investigating a stolen vehicle complaint inside the casino early Saturday morning.

Police said Rehn fled the scene and was discovered dead at a rural residence east of St. Albert.

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate his death as it occurred while police had the suspect contained in the home.

RCMP will continue to investigate the shooting incident.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Rehn on Monday.
