Two women, in two separate incidents, were attacked in Stony Plain this past week while using the trail system.
Shortly after midnight on Monday, RCMP say a 19-year-old woman was walking in the area of 49 Avenue and Brown Street, northbound on a path near the skate park, when a man came up behind her and threw her to the ground.
The man jumped on top of the woman, but she was able to fight him off and run to safety.
The suspect is described as:
- Caucasian
- late 30 or early 40s
- 5'10" with a stocky build
- Strong odor of alcohol
“Anytime any one of these, even in isolation, is reported to us it is concerning and it is a priority for us to look at and investigate,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Lokken with the Spruce Grove/ Stony Plain RCMP.
Then on Friday at 5:30 a.m., a 19-year-old woman was jogging near South Park Drive and 44 Avenue when she passed a man on the path.
RCMP say the man began to follow her. When he caught up, he forced her to the ground and reportedly sexually assaulted her.
The suspect is described as:
- Olive skin tone
- 40 to 45 years-old
- 6" tall and heavy set build
- dark colored tattoo on right wrist/ may have been sleeve tattoo
- Strong odor of alcohol
At this point, investigators aren't sure whether the two incidents are related.
"I think it's premature to say that it's one (suspect)," said Lokken. "We are looking at all possibilities. There are similarities in both cases but we haven't ruled out that they are separate incidents.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Stony Plain RCMP Detachment at 780-968-7267 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
