A University of Alberta student is in hospital with severe head injuries after he was attacked, and CTV News has learned a fraternity is under investigation by the university.
Sources told CTV News the victim remains in hospital with serious head injuries, including a broken jaw. CTV News has learned the incident in question started on the lawn outside of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house Thursday, September 7.
CTV News reached out to the victim for comment – he directed questions to the University of Alberta.
In a statement to CTV News, U of A spokesperson Bryan Alary said:
“University of Alberta Protective Services is assisting Edmonton Police Service with a criminal investigation into an alleged assault believed to have occurred near north campus the evening of Thursday, Sept. 7. One individual, a current U of A student, suffered extensive injuries as a result of the attack. The health, safety and well-being of our students is of the utmost importance to the university. Both the Office of the Dean of Students and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research are actively providing support to the injured student.”
The statement went on to say the Dean of Students was investigating “the activities of a student group under relevant policies”.
Sources told CTV News the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity is the one being investigated.
The same fraternity was sanctioned by the U of A in early 2011 for hazing conduct, specifically concerns over individual safety and dignity. Home video had surfaced, along with allegations that pledges were forced to eat their own vomit.
A five year suspension by the university was lifted after three years, in part due to a change in membership, and community and charity work done by the fraternity.
