A nation-wide online contest pitting restrooms from a number of high-end restaurants and boutique sweet shops across Canada has wrapped up – but the winner can’t be found in Toronto or Vancouver, it’s in a gas station in a northern Alberta town.
Officials with the Cintas’ Canada’s Best Restroom Contest said the restrooms in the Valleyview Shell Super Station came out on top – and the winning ‘thrones’ were officially crowned Wednesday with a special plaque.
Thousands voted in the nation-wide contest that included a variety of nominations, ranging from restaurants and hotels to nightclubs and breweries – officials said the five finalists were chosen based on cleanliness, visual appeal, functionality and designs.
The winning bathrooms were renovated in 2012 – and feature alder wood doors with privacy glass, alder wood tongue-and-groove boards on the ceiling, granite countertops, carved mirrors and Victorian-style chandeliers.
The four other finalists include the restrooms at CHOP restaurant, in Richmond, B.C., Steamworks Brew Pub in Gastown in Vancouver, MoRoCo Chocolat chocolate shop and lounge in Toronto, and the Marché Restaurant in Toronto.
