Alberta Health Services announced Monday that the number for Health Link Alberta was changing – replacing three different numbers.
Now, those seeking health information and advice can call 811 – a number that replaces existing Health Link 10-digit local numbers in Edmonton and Calgary, as well as the province-wide toll-free number.
Those numbers will not be disconnected for the time being – the old numbers will continue to direct callers to Health Link.
“Health Link is an invaluable service that gives Albertans across the province telephone access to registered nurses and other health professionals,” Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said in a press release. “By changing Health Link’s number to 811, access to experienced, responsive health advice will be even easier.”
Officials said last year, more than one million Albertans used Health Link – often preventing unnecessary trips to the emergency department.
AHS said of those who called with a health concern in 2014, 48 percent were advised to care for themselves at home, 36 percent were told to visit their doctor or another healthcare provider and 16 percent were told to go to emergency.
The change is also in line with a number of other provinces, including B.C. and Saskatchewan, who also use 811 for access to health care services.
