The City of Edmonton will likely use the controversial insecticide Dursban for one more year.
CTV Edmonton has learned that 160 kilograms of the chemical remains following the dry summer, which is enough for one more typical year.
City Councillor Andrew Knack said an end to the controversial debate is welcome news.
“Even though there is going to be challenges and we’re going to have a tougher time dealing with mosquitoes, I’d rather face that than continue to use this product,” said Knack.
Although it was never banned in Canada, Edmonton is the last major city to use Dursban, after studies linked it to brain damage and central nervous problems.
Edmonton has faced scrutiny over its use of the product after the group Pesticide Free Alberta submitted a complaint to Health Canada.
