Sources tell CTV News an Edmonton-area man died last weekend at a resort in Cancun, following an incident inside a nightclub.
Mexican news outlets have reported the young man passed away at about 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 5 at the Great Pernassus resort in Cancun.
A grisly image of a body, hidden under a white sheet accompanied the story.
According to reports, the young man was punched in the nose while inside a bar at the hotel, before going outside.
It’s believed he might have been hallucinating before he fell off the edge of a balcony.
CTV News has independantly confirmed the man who died in Cancun is Chris Rogers, 21, from St. Albert.
A spokesperson with Canada’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade department spoke to CTV News, and citing privacy of the victim, would only release the following statement:
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a Canadian citizen who passed away in Mexico.
Canadian Consular officials in Mexico are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information, and are providing consular assistance to the family.”
Police in Cancun did not immediately have details on the case at press time – and the general manager of the hotel was not available for comment.
A friend of Rogers told CTV News the young man was a student at the University of Alberta.
