Father Michael Troy, an inspirational force to Edmontonians young and old, passed away in his sleep early Friday morning.

To many Edmontonians, Father Michael Troy provided more than just spiritual guidance. He was a teacher, pastor and friend to hundreds of staff and students.

Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1917, Michael Troy was a member of a religious order of missionaries know as the Spiritans.

In 1965, he moved to Edmonton and began teaching at Archbishop MacDonald High School. Soon after, he began teaching at Saint Joseph High School where he remained for more than 32 years.

Edmonton Catholic Schools honoured Father Troy in 2003 for his many years of service by naming a new junior high school in south-east Edmonton after him.

Father Troy was the executive director of the Edmonton Archdiocesan Mission Council and edited a worldwide missionary magazine called the Spiritan.

The Father spearheaded local initiatives on behalf of the Holy Childhood Association, a Catholic mission society for children in kindergarten through grade eight, helping schools raise thousands of dollars for third-world countries.

Father Michael Troy passed away at the age of 92.
