Latvian media is reporting that a body found from the Daugava River in Riga is that of Oilers prospect Kristians Pelss.
According to a Facebook posting allegedly belonging to the Riga regional police, family members have confirmed the body pulled from the river on Thursday was Pelss.
The 20-year-old has been missing for several days.
A statement issued by the Edmonton Oilers Saturday said the details of the tragedy were still unclear.
"This is the news we feared. Kristians was an outstanding man and we feel terrible he has left us at such a young age," Oilers General Manager Craig MacTavish said in the statement.
"I can’t imagine how painful this situation is for the Pelss family. On behalf of everyone working at the Oilers, Oil Kings and our affiliate teams, as well as all of our fans, I offer our most sincere and deepest condolences to his family and friends. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with them as they work through this incredibly difficult time."
The body was recovered from the river on Thursday.
Many have taken to Twitter to express their sorrow, using the hashtag #prayforpelss.
