TORONTO - Former Guantanamo detainee Omar Khadr woke up in an Alberta prison this morning after months in isolation at a penitentiary in Ontario.
Khadr was flown to the Edmonton Institution yesterday.
His lawyer says he hopes the transfer is a positive step on his road to freedom.
The 26-year-old Khadr spent the last several months in isolation at Millhaven penitentiary after another inmate threatened his life.
He returned to Canada from Guantanamo last September to serve out the remainder of an eight-year sentence for war crimes committed in Afghanistan as a 15 year old.
His lawyer is hoping Khadr will now be able to get on with his education and better prepare for parole.
