An overnight fire has destroyed an abandoned building and caused smoke damage to a neighbouring auto body shop.
The blaze was reported at 102 Street and 105 Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Forty firefighters were brought in. It took crews about three hours to get the fire under control.
The fire was out by 6:45 a.m.
They believe the fire started outside and spread to the attic. It quickly spread to the roof forcing responders to fight the fire from the outside.
Fire officials said they were concerned the flames would spread to the auto shop next door. District Chief Trevor Whyte said “It’s a little smoky and a little wet but seems to be in check.”
No one was inside at the time of the fire.
Later Friday morning, officials said the blaze caused about $1 million in damages, and it appeared the fire started accidentally.
The shop next door only sustained some smoke and water damage in the blaze.
