Three people are dead, and a number of others are in hospital, after a multi-vehicle collision on the highway Sunday afternoon.
RCMP said on Sunday, at about 3 p.m., officers from High Prairie RCMP, along with emergency crews and members from the Lakeshore Police Service were called to a three-vehicle collision on the bridge on Highway 2, at the Driftpile First Nation.
On Monday, investigators said early evidence showed an SUV that was heading westbound on Highway 2 hit a car that was travelling in the opposite direction.
After that initial crash, the SUV hit a van that was also heading east.
As a result of the crash, the 36-year-old woman who was driving the van, along with the two passengers: a 12-year-old boy and an 11-month-old girl, were all pronounced dead at the scene. The van had caught fire, but a bystander managed to rescue a 4-year-old girl who was also a passenger in the van.
The girl was taken to hospital. RCMP said she suffered a broken bone and remains in hospital.
Two 17-year-olds were in the car; they were treated by paramedics and released with minor injuries.
The driver, and only person, in the SUV was a 57-year-old woman, she was airlifted by STARS to hospital in Edmonton where she remains in serious but stable condition.
RCMP are investigating all possible factors related to the collision.
