The changes continued at Rexall Place Monday, days after the Gretzky Statue was taken down, the Rexall Place sign was also removed.
There are two 47’ by 20’ signs ‘Rexall’ signs on the arena, one on the north side, the other on the south facing onto 118 Avenue. The south side sign was removed Monday morning.
“For today we’re actually going to ‘cut the face out’, as they call it, and that’s the actual Rexall logo, which is a tarp material that’s stretched like canvas,” Mario Skrzypczak said. “So we’ll cut that loose, bring that to the ground, and then bring the canister that it resides on down after that.”
Crews made a nasty discovery when they got a look inside the 8,000 pound sign.
"There's at least a dozen dead pigeons that made a home in there, and have passed away," Skrzypczak said. "We're going to have to take them down with the sign."
The arena will revert back to its original name: The Northlands Coliseum, when naming rights for Rexall run out, on August 31.
Northlands said a new sign will be installed on September 1.
