Former United States president Jimmy Carter is in Edmonton Sunday to kick off his Habitat for Humanity project at the Shaw Conference Centre.

For Canada 150, the former president is building 150 homes across Canada – including 75 in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan.

The project, called Carter Place, will bring 58 houses to the Laurel neighbourhood in southeast Edmonton. The city donated the land for the project, and the province donated an additional $4 million.

The families that will live in Carter Place have already been selected, and they agreed to spend 500 hours helping to build the homes they will move into.

Carter Place is expected to be ready in 2018.
