RCMP in Athabasca said Thursday that charges had been laid against a woman in her 30s – after a youth was struck by a vehicle while walking on the side of a highway.
On Tuesday at about 8:30 p.m., RCMP officers were called to a serious injury hit and run on Highway 55, in an area called ‘east hill’.
Investigators said a van headed eastbound on the highway struck a 12-year-old male pedestrian, who was thrown into the ditch. The vehicle left the scene of the crash.
The youth was taken to hospital in Athabasca, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
At about 11 p.m. that night, the suspect driver turned herself in to police, and police found her vehicle.
On Thursday, RCMP said Crystal Andres, 36, was facing charges of dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
