The city is introducing two new buses to the ETS fleet – and while they won’t appear any different from other buses – their unique power source is being tested.

Over the next two years, the pair of buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks will run on two routes – Route 6 (Mill Woods to Southgate) and Route 33 (Meadows to West Edmonton Mall).

“The buses have the same look and feel as regular ETS buses, but with a compartment on the roof that holds 7 CNG tanks,” Transportation Services General Manager Bob Boutilier said in a press release. “This pilot project gives us the opportunity to evaluate how CNG buses perform in our winter climate.”

The pilot project is being carried out to see how the buses perform in our climate.

Officials with the city are considering CNG powered buses as a cleaner alternative to diesel fuelled buses.
