The city announced the official start date for construction on the city’s new downtown arena.

City officials said Friday that construction on Rogers Place, the new downtown arena, will begin Monday, March 3.

Construction is expected to take place in the old parking lot, in the space between 104 Street and 102 Street, and between 104 Avenue and 105 Avenue.

Initial work will include installing fences around the construction site, placing trailers on the site and clearing the area – before excavation for the underground parkade and concrete piles will begin.

That phase, the city said, would take several months.

As construction begins, the city said the pedestrian sidewalk along 104 Avenue would be closed between 104 Street and 102 Street.

In addition, the north lane of 104 Avenue would be closed between 104 Street and 102 Avenue throughout construction – although the lane closure date depends on the weather as the lines need to be re-painted.

The city said construction vehicles would be using the current entrance to the Baccarat Casino at 103 Street and 104 Avenue, and exiting onto 104 Street.

The project is expected to take about 2 and-a-half years to complete.
