A celebration of contemporary art, called Nuit Blanche, opened to Edmontonians for the first time Saturday night.

The free event, which has spread around the world since beginning in Paris in 2002, runs from 7 p.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Sunday.

Spanning several city blocks, organizers said more than 30 art installations from local and international artists were set up around the downtown core – including the “Wish Tree” created by Yoko Ono and “Dance of the Cranes” presented by Ice District.

“Make sure you move about, plan your route, get prepared to get lost and experience the city in a new way”, said Nuit Blanche Edmonton chair and president Ruth Burns.

Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson was on-hand to officially kick-off the family affair.

More information about Nuit Blanche, or “sleepless night”, can be found online.
