The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) has been searching for a group of children that appeared in a 1960s photograph.

In the photo three kids are seen boarding a bookmobile bus during an Edmonton winter.

According to EPL marketing communications manager they have been hoping a social media campaign will reconnect them with the three youth.

“We are guessing that these kids are probably about 8 or 9-years old at the time,” Jessica McPhee explained.

“We are hoping through word-of-mouth and through sharing and retweeting we can identify at least one of these three young kids in the photo.”

McPhee said they discovered the image during a project to digitize old photographs.

“We are doing a project right now where we are taking a bunch of our photos from our earlier years and scanning them so that we have electronic versions for our use in a variety of publications.”

If they do find any of the children McPhee said she hoped they could record the event with a photo outside of the library's current mobile vehicle, epl2go.

“At that time they were really bookmobiles, so they were buses or streetcars with books in them – tons of books to choose from. Today, our EPL-to-go van is so very different. It is more focused on technology.”

According to the EPL website, the van will not be offering library materials to take home but instead a place to learn about technology or to access the internet.

“A lot of things you would find in our makerspace,” McPhee explained.

“It is a great way for us to reach some of the expanding parts of Edmonton that may not already have libraries in their communities.”

The bookmobile program was cut in 1991 due to budget constraints. The program has been relaunched this year.

McPhee said they were hoping to build up the program to include four vehicles, one for each area of the city.

If you have any information about the photograph, you can contact the library on their Facebook or Twitter accounts.
