The second annual Jolene Cote Memorial Soccer Tournament is being held in Spruce Grove this weekend.
The 36-year-old woman was found dead inside her family home in October of 2011.
Police have not solved the murder of the teacher and mother of two.
Organizers said they hope the tournament keeps Cote’s memory alive.
“The tournament is about community and family and Jolene but also about the investigation. We like to keep that alive as well,” Kerri Sutherland told CTV News.
“It would be nice to get some answers,” co-organizer Shelley Whyman said.
“I’m not sure you get closure but at least some peace for her family and friends.”
Whyman added they were also raising money for KidsSport, something Cote would have approved.
“She really loved giving back to the community and making sure all kids had an opportunity to play team sports.
“We want to keep her memory alive but do something in her spirit as well,” she explained.
Cote’s mother, Dorothy Commandeur said she was touched by the tournament.
“It makes me feel great pride for my daughter that she is so fondly remembered.”
There are 11 teams from the Capital Region competing in the Alberta Soccer Association sanctioned tournament.
Organizers said they hope to raise $3,500 for the charity through entry fees and sponsorships.
