Edmonton police said Friday that officers were on the lookout for a suspect, after a fatal hit and run in the city’s east side.

Police said it all started at about 8 a.m. Friday, when officers tried to stop a stolen truck in the area of 82 Street and 120 Avenue, police said the truck sped away northbound on 82 Street, before heading westbound on 120 Avenue.

EPS said the officers did not enter into a chase, but a description of the vehicle was provided to police officers.

Then, just before 9 a.m. officers found the stolen truck in a parking lot in the area of 32 Street and 113 Avenue, and two suspects, a male and female, were seen fleeing northbound, on foot.

Police caught and arrested the woman – meanwhile, the male stole a nearby vehicle that was running in a bid to escape. The owner of that truck tried to intervene, and ended up being struck and seriously injured as the suspect fled.

The victim, a 33-year-old man, died at the scene – and the suspect in the stolen vehicle fled the scene, police said it headed southbound on 29 Street into Rundle Park, then exiting onto 102 Avenue.

Police said officers were searching for the suspect and the vehicle.

The suspect is described as:

  • Aboriginal man
  • Believed to be in his 30s
  • Between 183 cm (6’) and 188 cm (6’2”) tall
  • Medium build
  • Medium length brown/black hair

Police said the suspect was reportedly wearing a red shirt with white horizontal stripes and jeans.

Investigators spent much of Friday searching for the vehicle, and said a member of the public spotted the stolen truck at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, in the area of 112 Avenue and 94 Street.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the death, Homicide Detectives are taking the lead on the investigation, with help from investigators in the EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit, and the Northeast and Downtown Divisions.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been notified, and they will investigate the police pursuit of the suspect.
