An investigation is underway after a home in St. Albert was destroyed in a blaze Saturday evening.

According to officials with the St. Albert fire department, they could see the smoke from their firehall on Giroux Road and were preparing to head out just before they were called.

“The fire fighters that were coming on duty could see the column of smoke as they were coming in the station,” acting chief Charles Tye explained.

He said the house was fully consumed with flames when they arrived just before 6 p.m.

“There were flames coming out of the roof, out of the windows on the front side and we elected to go to defensive attack," he said, explaining crews battled the blaze from the outside.

There were no injuries reported and investigators have not yet determined a cause but have estimate the damage at $500,000.

Neighbous said the house was under construction at the time.

“They are all sold here but I am not sure when those people were moving in,” Tom Cockle told CTV News.

Tye said a second house was also damaged in the fire and had to have the electricity cut off.
