A proposal designed to help tighten belts in Fort McMurray Public Schools was voted down Tuesday – after parents voiced their concerns.
The vote came over a number of options the board brought forward to trim their budget, in an effort to deal with a multi-million dollar deficit.
Among the proposed cost-cutting options was cutting a number of school weeks down to four days.
It was estimated that the move would save the district up to $1 million in staffing and transportation costs.
However, the idea was panned by parents – many of whom said they had concerns about child care on those shortened weeks.
The school board is attempting to balance the books, as it faces a $4.4 million deficit.
