Officers with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) issued a warning about a dangerous illicit drug Friday – after a significant amount of the drug was seized by investigators from an Edmonton home.
ALERT said a search warrant was carried out on a home in the city’s northeast on June 18 – inside, police found and seized more GHB than officers from across Alberta did in 2014.
A total of 8.5 litres of GHB, or gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (also commonly called the ‘date-rape drug’) was seized from that home. Last year, ALERT teams from across Alberta seized a total of 8 litres of the substance.
Police said in this instance, GHB was being sold in water bottles, and the clear liquid would be nearly indistinguishable from water to the untrained eye – ALERT said a small drink from an unsuspecting person or child could lead to fatal results.
In addition to the GHB, investigators also seized:
- 47 grams of methamphetamine
- 131 Percocet pills
- 121 Valium pills
- 6 firearms
- Ammunition
- $16,110 in cash proceeds of crime
ALERT said all of the guns were seized from a vehicle at the home – and two of the guns had been reported stolen from Edmonton and Calgary.
A total of 44 charges have been laid against four individuals, identified as: Mark Boivin, 31, Chantel Garnier, 31, Kevin Jurach, 58, and Aaron Watt, 19.
The charges are related to drugs, guns, stolen property, and breaches.
