Groat Road will remain closed as the City works to investigate and repair four of the seven steel girders that twisted during installation over the weekend.
The City was working on installing the steel girders for the 102 Avenue Bridge Replacement Project when some of the girders buckled.
“This is obviously very serious [and] very concerning, this is a safety issue and we need to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible and then ensure the right steps are taken after the investigation to salvage what’s salvageable and carry on construction,” said Mayor Don Iveson
The road was expected to open on Monday, however due to complications there is now no timeline on when the road will reopen.
“Removed or repaired, until everything is safe above and below. It’s public safety. Those are 40 tonnes of steel. They buckled at 2:15 [a.m.], as we speak, there’s a lot of stress out there on the steel. So we have to do our due diligence and make sure we’re investigating it properly and come up with the safest solution.” Barry Belcourt with the City of Edmonton said.
City officials said the project could be a year behind schedule.
The City will provide updates as the investigation continues, and will notify Edmonton residents when Groat Road is ready to open.
