There were ear-to-ear smiles, from young and old, at a sod turning for a new community hall in Edmonton’s Lymburn neighbourhood Friday morning.
The Callingwood and Lymburn communities have been seeking this kind of facility for more than 30 years.
“It’s just a wonderful day to be here,” Callingwood/Lymburn Community League President Terry Demers said.
The Callingwood/Lymburn Community League has been actively pursuing the project for nearly a decade. Present and previous boards have undertaken needs assessment surveys, and research, to build the most wide-reaching facility possible.
“It will be wonderful to have girl guides and boy scouts, and all sorts of programs for the really young, right up to seniors,” Demers said. “We plan on having programs for everyone.”
And to secure funding for the $800,000 building, all three levels of government have had to contribute.
“It was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. They don’t build many community leagues in Edmonton, so they wanted to make sure all the T’s were crossed and I’s were dotted.”
The new community hall on 72 Avenue and 187 Street is expected to open in September.
