RCMP announced Friday that there is a new head of the police service in Alberta.

On Friday, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson announced that Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan had been appointed as the new Commanding Officer for K-Division RCMP.

Ryan takes over the position from retiring Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan, effective immediately.

As head of K-Division, Ryan is responsible for leading the RCMP in Alberta – including all 112 RCMP detachments.

In addition, she assumes the rank of Deputy Commissioner, and will become a member of the Commissioner’s Senior Executive Committee.

RCMP said Ryan grew up on a farm near London, Ontario – and joined the RCMP in 1982, after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario.

She has worked with the RCMP for 31 years, and has served as the Officer-in-Charge of Criminal Operations in Alberta since January 2011.

Ryan has also been honoured by the Governor General of Canada, in May 2013 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by Governor General David Johnston.

A date for a formal Change of Command Ceremony to mark this change has not yet been set.
