The 2015 first-overall draft pick won’t be suiting up for an Oilers game any time soon, the organization said Wednesday, after suffering a serious injury on the ice Tuesday night.
Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli announced Connor McDavid was out “indefinitely” Wednesday morning after breaking his left clavicle in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers at Rexall Place Tuesday night.
McDavid was injured after he hit the boards near the end of the second period – he had a partial short-handed breakaway, but fell and was ridden into the boards by Flyers defencemen Michael Del Zotto and Brandon Manning, who both also lost their balance in the play.
McDavid left the ice, and didn’t return for the third period. The Oilers went on to defeat the flyers 4-2.
Chiarelli said McDavid would have surgery Wednesday, and said it would involve “plates and screws”, and said doctors believe the injury is not season ending.
McDavid has had a solid start for the Oilers, recording 12 points in as many games – he was named rookie of the month for October.
UPDATE: Edmonton Oilers said late Wednesday that McDavid's surgery was successful, reports indicated he might not return to the ice until after Christmas.
