Late Friday morning, in the Alberta legislature, Calgary businesswoman and philanthropist Lois Mitchell officially became the province’s new lieutenant governor.
Mitchell was sworn-in during a ceremony that included a brass band, a military guard of honour and a 15-gun military salute.
She became Alberta’s 18th lieutenant governor, and replaces Donald Ethell to act as the Queen’s representative in Alberta.
During her time as lieutenant governor, Mitchell will carry out official and ceremonial duties – signing legislation passed by the house to formally make it law, and will read the speech from the throne at the start of each legislative session.
Mitchell runs a consulting and marketing business, and has worked for a number of charitable and philanthropic causes, including the promotion of women in sports.
