As of Monday, residents of Fort McMurray, and anyone flying to or from that city, have a new international airport terminal to serve them.
Early Monday morning, the first passengers arrived at the new terminal, located southwest of the old facility.
Officials said the new facility is capable of serving up to 1.5 million passengers annually.
The new terminal is about five times the size of the old airport terminal that was bursting at the seams, in 2013 about 1.2 million passengers went through.
The airport handles flights between Fort McMurray and destinations in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
