RCMP in northern Alberta are investigating after a single-vehicle crash left one woman dead, and another seriously injured.
Boyle RCMP said a small SUV with a number of people inside rolled on a roadway in the Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement.
It’s believed the driver of the vehicle lost control on the gravel road before the crash.
All but two of the people inside the vehicle quickly fled after the crash, but told owners of a nearby home that a woman was still inside the car suffering from serious injuries.
The owners of the home tried to help the woman, and called 911 – but emergency crews pronounced the 31-year-old Edmonton woman dead when they arrived on the scene.
Later, in a home about 5 kilometres away from the crash, a second injured person was found.
RCMP said the 16-year-old was suffering from serious but non-life threatening injuries, and was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton by STARS – at last word, he was in stable condition.
Police are still investigating, and are working through evidence and accounts from witnesses to work out who was driving at the time of the crash.
Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash, police said nobody inside the vehicle was wearing seatbelts.
