STARS Air Ambulance was called to a fatal collision on highway 770 and township road 512 shortly after 6 a.m. Monday.
Police believe that two vehicles were involved in a head on crash. One of the drivers passed away at the scene, the second driver was pulled from his vehicle.
He was transported by STARS to the University Hospital in Edmonton.
Later Monday, police said three passersby; including an off-duty Stony Plain firefighter played a major role in the rescue – pulling the injured man out of his burning vehicle.
“So, if anyone did witness anything, we are asking them to call the Spruce Grove/Stony Plain office to provide some information to us,” Const. Kathleen Fossen with Spruce Grove RCMP said. “One of those Good Samaritans, we’re unaware of his identity.”
The names of the two individuals have not been released.
RCMP closed the area to traffic at Highway 770 to Highway 627 for much of the day.
The scene of the crash is approximately 70 kilometers south west of Edmonton.
RCMP are investigating the crash.
