St. Albert MP Michael Cooper discussed a plan to push for a bill that was named after fallen RCMP officer David Wynn on Friday, and Wynn’s widow was on hand to show her support.
Wynn’s Law would make it mandatory for prosecutors to provide evidence of an accused’s criminal history during a bail hearing, and it was discussed in the House of Commons on Thursday.
Cooper said Friday the Liberal government doesn’t plan to support it, and said the law would potentially create a backlog in the judicial system.
The Bill was introduced following the death of St. Albert RCMP officer David Wynn. He was shot at close range in January 2015 while investigating a stolen vehicle at the APEX Casino.
The shooter reportedly had more than 50 convictions, 38 outstanding warrants and several failures to appear in court.
Wynn’s widow, Shelly, said the law would have been important to her husband.
“Even if it’s just one family that doesn’t have to go through this, it’s worth it,” Wynn said. “I will fight a lifetime for this to pass if I have to.”
Cooper has launched an online petition to gather support for the bill, he hopes to table the petition before the vote in February.
